I am going to Atlantic City for a conference in May and was wondering if anyone new any good bars/breweries/liquor stores in the area. I was also playing around with the idea of taking the train into Philiy and checking that out. Any good places there? I won't have a car so any place close to a train line would be perfect. Thanks.
Beer in Philly and Atlantic City
Atlantic City isn’t the best place to grab a beer but there are a couple of places to get a good pint. Firewaters, located in the Tropicana casino, has a 100 bottle beer list and 50 taps with a good mix of craft and imports. The atmosphere is typical sports bar and don’t expect your server to know much about the beer they are bringing you. The closest brewery is the Tun Tavern across the street from the convention center at 2 Miss America Way. It has been awhile since I have stopped in but from what I remember the beer was fairly good.
If time permits take the trip to Philly. You will probably arrive at 30th Street Station and if you want to grab a beer close Bridgewater’s Pub is right in the station. However if you have come this far you owe it to yourself to grab a cab and head for Monk’s Café (only 1.5 miles) in Center City. All About Beer magazine just listed Monk’s as the #9 place to have a beer before you die. Most of the taps are dedicated to Belgian brew but you will also find a great selection of craft beer and other imports. Don’t forget to try the pomme frites (fries) and mussels. Depending on how much time you have the big plus to going to Monk’s is you will be in easy walking distance of several other great beer places. Nodding Head Brewery, Jose Pistolas, Good Dog bar, Tria Cafe and Fado Irish pub are all with in a few blocks. Hope you enjoy the trip

Walking to Monk's
Thanks Brian. I think I will do one night in Atlantic City and one in Philly.
What's the neighborhood like between the 30th St. Station and Monk's? Could I walk it or would it be better to take a cab?
Walking in Philly
The neighborhood between 30th Street Station and Monk's isn't much to look at until you get around 20th St. If it is during the day and you want the exercise go for it. If it's in the evening and you still want to experiece walking the city grab a cab at 30th Street Station and have it take you to 20th and Walnut. Walk down Walnut to 16th St., make a right and in a couple of blocks you're at Monk's. This walking tour will take you through part of Philly's restaurant, bar and shopping district. Enjoy.
